The Prolight is Vulkans flagship GI model and one of my favourite GIs. I own 2 Prolights and many other top brand GIs and the Prolight is my GI of choice when it comes to my training.
The Version I will be reviewing is the Vulkan Prolight in Blue A1.
First impressions are very good. The GI jacket and trousers are very lightweight and soft to the touch. No stiff and/or course feeling material here. The patches and stitching look immaculate, there are no loose threads etc.
I’m 5ft 10 and weigh 69kg and the A1 fits me perfectly. The cut of the jacket has a tailored feel to it so it fits closer to the body than a standard GI. No wizards sleeves here!
The quality and design of the patches look stylish and tidy. There are 2 shoulder patches, a chest patch and lower lapel patch. On the trousers there is a small hip patch and a patch on the side of the left leg.
The Prolight has the right balance of branding. It’s not blinged up like some GIs and not as plain as some of the others it’s somewhere in between and it’s this that gives the Prolight its wide appeal.
LOWER LAPEL PATCH
The GI jacket is made from Vulkans very own weave called “Honeycomb weave”. It’s a variation on pearl weave and is lightweight and very durable.
Some pearl weaves can be stiff and course on the skin and can be uncomfortable and irritating to train in and that’s not the case with the Prolight.
THE MATERIAL THAT THE JACKET IS MADE FROM IS TOP NOTCH. IT’S LIGHTWEIGHT, SOFT AND SUPPLE AND IT’S THIS THAT MAKES IT VERY COMFORTABLE TO TRAIN IN.
The lapel has a rubberised inner core and has a medium stiffness to it. Some people prefer stiff lapels but I find them uncomfortable and irritating to train in. The medium stiffness of the Prolights lapel is perfect. It’s stiff enough to hold its shape but flexible enough to be comfortable.
The trousers are made from 8oz cotton and are lightweight and fit me well. Like the GI jacket they have a tailored feel to them.
The waist tie is the flat cotton type and does the job well enough. One improvement for the trousers would be a rope tie but my other Prolights and Koral MKM have the flat cotton waist ties and they have worked fine in the 3+ years I’ve had them.
FOR ME THE VULKAN PROLIGHT IS THE CLOSEST THING TO THE PERFECT GI
People will have their own opinions on what makes a GI look good but everyone will look for the same things when it comes to the functionality of a GI.
The Vulkan Prolight ticks every box when it comes to this department. Its lightweight, comfortable and durable. The Prolight is a joy to train in and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
