Prime are are new British brand on the scene and their first entry into the market is as stylish and sleek as their name suggests.
What first struck me was the elegance of the gi and the all important branding. Too often do we see a new gi decorated from neck to hem in patches both poorly placed and over designed. Prime have decided on simple, woven logo patches on the shoulders. There is also a small patch on one thigh and, pleasantly surprising, a small patch on the back on the collar. This attention to detail is an indication that the refined simplicity of the gi is a well devised plan rather than an oversight of design.
The P1 jacket is a light pearl weave weighing in at 450 grams which will ease any weight cutting fears. The lapel is rubberised and covered in Rip Stop which is firm yet very comfortable. When you’re wearing this jacket it feels very, very comfortable which is a big issue I have with a lot of gis.
BACK OF COLLAR PATCH
The jacket almost feels tailored and is tapered on the sleeves in which have Prime have placed a hem lining on the inside bearing their logo. Sometimes this gi has touches of a fine tailored suit than a fighting kimono.
LOWER LAPEL PATCH AND BRANDED TAPE
The trousers are about 10 ounces and are cotton made with a thick rope tie and 4 drawstring loops which keep the knot firmly in place. A problem I have in choosing a gi, and I am sure I am not alone, is which size to get!? I am at the awkward height and weight which seems to be between sizes. While the A2 was initially slightly to big for me, after one wash at 60 degrees (I purposely tested to see how it would handle a hot wash) the gi is a perfect fit. I can’t speak for all sizes but if you are between sizes I would opt for the larger of the two and use a hot wash. After this one wash there has not been any shrinkage on my normal 30 degree cycle. This was great news.

AVAILABLE IN WHITE AND BLACK I THINK THE P1 IS A BEAUTIFULLY MADE GI AND AT ONLY £79.99 YOU ARE GETTING A PREMIUM GI AT A MID-TIER PRICE
Training in this gi is very comfortable and by that I mean unless you being strangled with it you barely notice it. It is soft yet firm and very durable. I have used this as my main training gi for the month and it still looks and feels as good as new.
In conclusion, the guys at Prime have brought an almost retro chic, stylish gi to market that is certain to hold up to many hours of rigorous training/competing. Available in white and black I think the P1 is a beautifully made gi and at only £79.99 you are getting a premium gi at a mid-tier price. I will be keeping a close eye on what these guys do next.
